review of 2014 battle

Sparkle Motion Won!

What a fabulous night of truly amazing talent! First to take the stage were newcomers Envatones. We had no idea
what to expect from this band but they quickly owned the stage kicking off with a rocking version of Mrs Robinson.

They followed up with some old time rock’n’roll tunes like Shake Rattle and Roll, and Great Balls of fire making use of their great keyboard player, guy and girl singers and saxophone! The passionate rendition of Careless Whisper was an unexpected treat and a cheeky 99 Red Balloons made reference to last year’s winners – Hellvetica.

There’s no doubting 99design’s commitment to the show. If the contest was judged on costume alone Hellvetica would easily have won.

It was an over the top (gun) set of power pop tunes including You Really Got Me, Are You Gonna Be My Girl and Tenacious D’s Tribute. Wow.

Next up were Sparkle Motion from ThoughtWorks. Such a fun set, opening with Sweet Transvestite and going on to tunes like Killing in the Name Of. Great theatre and fantastic musicianship. Surely the highlight of the whole evening was The Devil Went Down to Georgia. With electric violin no less. How can you compete with that!

Last band for the night was Lost Property Office from REA. Certainly the most consistently on genre band, they picked 90s Britpop. Garbage, Elastica and of course Oasis. A final guitar ever solo from Rich Durnall closed the set.

the first battle

The first ever battle of the bands specifically for Melbourne tech companies was held on 30th August 2013. The event was SOLD OUT. Three bands entered. One band left victorious. Hellvetica from 99designs had a stunning victory with a set of 80s power pop and some spectacular costumes.

Over $3000 was raised for charity
